Streamline your month-end: Post journals from Syft to Xero

The work you’ve already done in Syft doesn’t need to stop at insight or preparation. It can carry through into the accounting platform that underpins your close.

Written by Alex

We’ve spent the last few months strengthening the Financial Close experience in Syft to help make month-end faster and less manual. One important piece, though, has been missing: the ability to post journals in Syft and have them flow through to Xero.

That gap mattered because finance teams don’t just want to prepare journals in a separate workflow. They want to close the loop in the accounting platform where their books live. With Syft already helping teams handle cleanup, reallocations, prepaid expenses and revenue recognition, the next logical step was making it easier to send those journal entries through to Xero and create a more streamlined close process from start to finish.

Now, you can do exactly that.

A more connected way to close

Financial close is full of moving parts. Even when the adjustment work is well organised, the final steps can still feel fragmented if teams need to recreate or manually transfer journals into their accounting system.

By enabling journals created in Syft to be posted back to Xero the workflow becomes more connected. Instead of treating close adjustments as something that happens outside your accounting platform, you can manage the work in Syft and complete the process in Xero, where your final records are maintained.

That means less switching between tools, fewer manual handoffs, and a cleaner path from identifying an adjustment to getting it reflected in your books.

Note 📝: You are currently only able to use this functionality to push back to Xero or QuickBooks Online.

Why this matters for finance teams

The real value of this update is not just the feature itself; it’s what it helps remove from the close process.

When journals can move from Syft into Xero, finance teams can reduce the friction that often sits between review and execution. The work you’ve already done in Syft doesn’t need to stop at insight or preparation. It can carry through into the accounting platform that underpins your close.

This is especially valuable for teams already using Syft to manage common close activities such as:

  • cleanup entries

  • reallocations

  • prepaid expenses

  • revenue recognition

Bringing journal posting into that flow helps turn Financial Close into a more complete end-to-end experience, rather than a set of disconnected tasks.

How does it work?

At a high level, the process is simple: prepare the journals you need in Syft, then post them back to your accounting provider as part of your close workflow.

You can either select to post to Xero on creation or after you’ve created it, as long as it’s not during a locked period or using a Syft-created account.

Note 📝: When you’ve set up a locked period in your accounting system, you won’t be able to post journals back to this period because it’s a locked period.

A few important things to remember:

  • If you process anything to accounts receivable, it will post an invoice or credit note.

  • If you process anything to accounts payable, it will post a bill.

  • If you process a debit to the bank account, it will post cash received.

  • If you process a credit to the bank account, it will be cash spend.

  • Any other account type will post as a journal entry.

Note 📝: If you delete a journal in Syft, it will automatically reverse the journal in Xero.

The benefit of this approach is that it keeps the work grounded in the process your team is already following. Syft supports the close activities that lead up to the journal, and Xero remains the place where those journals ultimately land as part of the final accounting record.

Rather than creating extra steps, the goal is to make the handoff feel more natural and more efficient.

How this impacts prepaid expenses and revenue recognition

We recently introduced the ability to account for prepaid expenses and revenue recognition on Syft. Now, we’ve made these features more powerful by enabling you to post these back to Xero as well.

Note: If you want to post prepaid expenses or revenue recognition to Xero, you will be limited to the accounts and transactions available in your provider. This means no Syft-specific accounts.

Important notes

Tracking categories

You can post to two types of tracking categories from Syft to Xero, but you can’t post two of the same type of tracking category. In other words, you can post to a revenue stream and a location but not to two locations or two revenue streams.

Contacts and notes

If you assign a contact or a note to a Syft journal that will post as a manual journal in Xero, it won’t impact the accounts receivable or payable in Xero. However, if you post with a contact assigned to accounts receivable or payable, your ageing will automatically update in Xero.

Deleting and editing journal entries

We recommend that you delete journal entries in Syft, rather than in Xero, for them to reflect correctly.

If you make edits to journals in Syft, this will reflect in Xero as well. This won’t create a new journal, invoice or bill, but will show in the original source document.

How to find Syft journals in Xero

In Xero, you will see a flag with ‘from Syft Analytics’ next to the entry you’ve posted. Not seeing the journal? Click ‘Refresh’ and it will pull through.

Why is it great?

Financial close should feel connected. Teams want tools that work together in a way that reflects how finance work actually gets done. If you’re already using Syft to manage key close adjustments, being able to post journals through to Xero helps remove one of the last missing links in the process.

In practice, that can mean:

  • a smoother workflow from adjustment to final posting

  • less manual rework at month-end

  • a more streamlined close experience across Syft and Xero

  • greater confidence that the work done during close carries through to the underlying accounting platform

For busy finance teams, small reductions in friction can make a meaningful difference. And at close, that matters.

Closing thoughts

This update is an important step forward in making Financial Close in Syft more complete. We’ve already been focused on helping teams move faster through the adjustments and accounting tasks that shape month-end. Adding the ability to post journals back to Xero helps bring that experience together from start to finish.

If your team is looking for a more streamlined close workflow, this feature helps bridge the gap between doing the work in Syft and finalising it in Xero.
